The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
