Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
