EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
